The Custodian

The running of an art gallery is not something to take lightly - I am now discovering.  Not if one has high ambitions for the gallery's future and reputation.  Starting one in a deep economic crisis is certainly interesting.

The purpose of this blog?  Sanity!

How does an architect also become a curator and can one run two small businesses (and three small children) without some sort of madness setting in.

I set out to find an office for our small and thriving architectural practice.  The ambition was to be surrounded by works of art that would delight the eye, lighten the soul and be appropriate for the fabulous homes we're creating for our clients. Someone else was to run the gallery.  It is, after all, another full time job, as I have since discovered.  Perhaps it gets easier - its certainly enjoyable.

What has become difficult is the split and proper allocation of time, especially during this period when everything is uncertain.  A year ago this probably would have been much easier in some ways - more staff to assist, easier funds to invest and probably an easier success to make of it.  A year ago though, someone else would have taken it on and, in spite of the tiredness and the plethora of "to do" lists, I feel I would have missed out on what is essentially tonic for the human soul.  I agree with Tolstoy when he says that "..in order to correctly define art it is necessary first of all to cease to consider it as a means to pleasure and to consider it as one of the conditions of human life."
